What is a relief print?

A relief print is a type of printmaking that typically uses wood, linoleum or easy carve to print the raised areas of a carving. Think stamp! Using carving or woodcut tools, you can creat an image by cutting away the areas you want to remain the colour of the paper you’re printing on. Whatever is left is covered in a thin layer of ink, and then stamped onto paper using a press or by hand.

I use linoleum and easy carve and hand press them.

How much is a custom piece and how do I order them?

I'm happy to hear your custom order requests! As a policy I do not accept commissions to recreate another artist's work. Additionally, I am more likely to take on projects that fall within my aesthetic and artistic scope. Feel free to peruse my past & current works on Instagram to get a sense of what I do.

If my aesthetic seems like it suits your project, please send a message with your general ideas and I'll see what I can do! Exact quotes/turnaround times can be given upon discussing project details but generally custom work takes 3+ weeks for completion.

What do you mean when you say something is “archival”?

Archival is term used mainly to describe the longevity of something. In other words, it is a measurement of how long the image will last without losing its colour and without fading or changing its tones.

I say this to really give my customers an idea of the quality and care of my work. I use this term a lot regarding my prints and paintings, and especially in my hand pressed prints. With this work I’m not looking for the cheap or quick method. I want my customers to know the work they buy and support is made with nothing but love and care. I simply want it to last.

How do you price your work?

Everything I create is very carefully priced. My prices are set as affordable as possible, but keep in mind, I still have to make a profit.

I go by material cost, and time. Most artists use this method when choosing a price. We chose a rate per hour that we charge. This is to make sure we are getting a fair amount for the time and work we put into our business and artwork.

Materials vary for each piece, this is why you’ll sometimes see things that may be smaller in size but high in price and others large in size but lower in price. This could be that there was more detail in the smaller piece, or the paper used was more expensive.

Do you allow people to use your designs for tattooing?

If you are interested in getting one of my existing designs tattooed, please submit a request with the design you have in mind (photos help) by email to angelaerinsmyth@gmail.com. Most designs are available for tattoo, but a few custom and one of a kind pieces are special for their recipients and out of respect I ask that those not be tattooed.

If approved, my fee for use of existing work is $30/design which can be sent via PayPal to angelaerinsmyth@gmail.com. I ask that I be tagged/credited for the design & would love to see photos of the finished piece! :)

Additionally, I occasionally take custom tattoo projects. If interested, please check availability by email and I can provide pricing and additional information.

I missed out on getting a product, and now it’s sold out! Will you be restocking more?

It depends on the product and the responses I get. If I notice something is really popular and I’ve been asked by many to bring it back, I usually will. Some products are not worth restocking and won’t be back. The best way to know, is to message, or email me! The more vocal you are about products, the better I can understand what you’d like to see from me. :)

Why do you decide to not bring products back? And why change things so frequently?

There’s many reasons why I will decide to not bring things back. One reason is that sometimes, things don’t sell as quickly as I’d like, and I end up with things sitting around my studio for too long, which end up having to go on sale. Another is that, in order to keep myself motivated and growing, I need to keep my products fresh and new! I can get restless easily and I love creating new work! It’s also business smart, if you have products sitting around for years, people see there’s no rush to get the things they love from you cause they’ll always be there. Where as if you make a limited amount, it’s more incentive to buy things when they’re available. It’s important for my business to grow and change with me, and new products help this!

How often do you do sales? Will old product eventually go on sale?

I try to do sales every season. This could be a holiday sale, or old product that needs to go. This isn’t always guaranteed.

I like to move out old product at the end of every season, so if there’s still things hanging around the shop, they’ll most likely go on sale.

I don’t always know the exact day if or when I will run a sale, so please don’t ask me when something will be on sale or when I will run a sale. It always depends on my current stock, and what has been around for awhile or isn’t selling. I always do an announcement on Instagram prior and on the shop banner.

Do you make digital copies of your original paintings? I can’t afford an original, but want a smaller more affordable version.

On occasion I will reproduce some of my originals, if they are popular enough. I don’t always have the time to photograph and reproduce everything. Especially when I am preparing for a market.

Usually, I have specific paintings designed for digital prints. And the rest of my originals are a one time deal. This is why I try to have a variety of sizes of originals that are a little more affordable.

I aim to have as many price points as possible so there are more affordable products, as I understand the struggle with not wanting to lay down tons of money.
